What to Do on a Rest Day (That Isn't Nothing)

Rest days are easy to plan and hard to actually take. The trainers are by the door. The app is asking where you've been. And sitting still feels like falling behind.

So here are ten things to do on a rest day. None of them are training in disguise.

1. Go for a walk

No watch, no route, no target. A walk gets blood moving through tired legs and gives your head the same quiet a run does, without the impact.

2. Sleep in, or go to bed early

Most recovery happens while you sleep. If your rest day can include an extra hour, that hour is doing more for your running than any session.

3. Eat properly

Not a diet. Just a proper meal or two. Rest days are when your body rebuilds, and it needs something to rebuild with.

4. Stretch or do some mobility

Ten minutes on the floor while the kettle boils. Hips, calves, hamstrings. It doesn't need to be a class.

5. Foam roll in front of the telly

Mildly unpleasant. Quietly useful. Keep the roller by the sofa so it actually happens.

6. Do the life admin running pushes out

The washing. The phone call. The thing you've been putting off for three long runs. Clearing it makes the next run feel lighter.

7. Spend the time with someone

If running usually takes you out of the house, a rest day can put you back in it. Breakfast with family, a coffee with a friend, a slower morning with whoever you share your week with.

8. Plan the week, then close the app

Look at the next few days, decide what's realistic around work and everything else, and leave it there. Then stop checking what everyone else ran.

9. Go for a swim or an easy spin

Optional. If you like moving on rest days, something gentle and low-impact is fine - as long as you finish it feeling fresher than you started.

10. Do nothing, on purpose

This counts. Genuinely. A rest day you spend on the sofa without feeling guilty is a rest day done properly.

What not to do on a rest day

  • Sneak in a "quick easy 5k" because you feel fine
  • Swap the run for a hard gym session
  • Spend it feeling bad about not running

That last one is the reason Rest Day exists. Running is supposed to help your head, not give it something else to worry about. Rest is part of it.
